Solar desalination systems use solar energy, either through photovoltaic (PV) panels or solar thermal technologies, to power desalination processes such as Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Multi-Effect Distillation (MED). Solar thermal systems can directly use solar heat to evaporate seawater and condense freshwater.
• Applications: Small-scale desalination for off-grid communities, desert regions, coastal areas with abundant sunlight, and arid regions with high solar potential.
• Advantages: Completely renewable, reduces reliance on conventional energy sources, and is highly scalable from small to large systems. Solar thermal desalination also integrates well with thermal processes like MED or Multi-Stage Flash (MSF).
